I have really been a lousy blogger lately. I am still here, still making beads.

Lots of changes have been happening in my life, but teaching and sharing my passion for glass remains the same.

I will be teaching a two day class on Raking and Masking at the Third Degree Glass Factor on Saturday and Sunday, March 20 and 21 in St. Louis, Missouri - there are still a few spots left

Things that just don't add up.

I opened an email the other day. It said you should send all your class requirements to your ex husband????

Really? Why would I want to do that?

I look again. Nope - that is what it says. Getting ready for your upcoming class. Send the ex what you need - again ????? Why would he want to know that? How does the studio even know his name. None of this is making any sense to me. But of course, I am having a small mind fart. There could, possibly, be more than one man with that name.

Indeed, I was not married to the dreadlocked fellow that works at the Pittsburgh Glass Center.

You can see all the details for my class on their website (or by clicking right here). I am very excited to be teaching in Pittsburgh from the 8-12th of June, 2015.

I guess I will get to meet the dreadlocked dude when I get there :)
Where does the time go?

It is a very cold winter in the Toronto area so far. But I escaped for 10 days to Arizona recently.

Had the great pleasure of teaching four classes at The Melting Point in beautiful Sedona, Arizona. The weather was perfect, The studio set up is gorgeous. Wonderful hosts, Erin and Mike McMillen. Mike took me out really early one morning in his big red jeep to do some off roading in the beautiful red hills. I think I was pretty brave about the whole thing - it really is beautiful out there in the hills.
You can see the patterning better from above. She is a cute birdie, but it took forever to make the layered and raked portion for the plumage. Then I lose and/or distort most of it leaving only a small portion showing. In the end I really think this little gal may really truly be one of a kind, as I think I am unlikely to try this again.

I have also been thinking about different patterning for the plumage. This time I made really plain plumage and decorated it with a layered flower. I like how this little gal turned out.
I am certainly still having fun with the birdies, but I am missing my beads too. Planning to work out getting two torches available in the studio - the big debate it a Y connection or quick connects. I am sure either will suffice in the end. Then I can have my Minor back and still use the Bobcat to make birdies. I have been tossing around some other ideas, but mostly I am making birdies.
Truthfully, life has been pretty busy and there has not been much time for my torch lately.

There members of the flock were created in the last few weeks.
I am really enjoying the evolution of my birdies. There have gotten so much better and now I am able to play with some embellishments.

First up are the blue birds of happiness.

After these were created I had a small epiphany - what if I could separate the wings? Flying birdies.

The results are not the prettiest of my birdies - but there are certainly possibilities if the wings can be separated from the body.

And the last bunch - Birdies with hats. I think they turned out
pretty cute. The long necked one is not quite as steady on her feet as I
would wish her to be - she will have a wee leg adjustment next time I
am on the torch - that should fix her up.
Stevi Belle's work was top of my list. She hails from the western part of the USA - not someplace I was going to very often almost 15 years ago. I have always drooled over her beads and recently began a quest for one. Recently my quest has paid off.

Stevi has not made beads in many years. She moved onto other creative pursuits. But I think that this lady bead has really stood the test of time.
I am fascinated by this process as I am by the lady beads.
In fact I found another one online - a beautiful red lady called Isadora who is on her way to me now.

How can a girl resist.

I taught two back to back classes in Calgary, at Tiffany House.

Wow! I cannot say enough nice things about Irina Laird, Tiffany House, her family, the hospitality and all my students. Well, I could complain about the weather. It was September 10th - really too early for snow don't you think? Well, it had been snowing for about three days at that point, the poor trees still had all their leaves. The snow had frozen and then more snow arrived. There were leaves and branches all over the place. I don't seem to have any pictures of the snow or damage but this is my friend Angie's back yard the morning I arrived.

Angie and Irina managed to make it to the airport to pick me up. The snow ended as I arrived that afternoon.

All of my students were amazing. I had a great time teaching.

I arrived home and began getting ready for my next adventure - this time Glass Stock East.

Now Glass Stock is unlike anything I have ever participated in, except maybe summer camp. It really felt like a really short, grown up sort of summer camp.

We had a hat contest.

I loved Glass Stock - I taught three classes. I took three classes. I played all the games and even snuck off to the ocean! The ocean!
Glass Stock was a total blast. I am already planning on attending next year. I so enjoyed meeting all the folks at Carlisle Glass and all the attendees.

I am home for just a couple of weeks then heading off to Ottawa for their annual glass bead show. The adventures continue.

I have been so busy that there was not official September photo - perhaps this week I can get one taken of some of the month's birdies. Not too many beads were created in September. Birds - oh so many birds. I am still rather obsessed but having fun with them.

But at the start of the month, I was plodding along mostly as I had done before.

I found this cool site Design Seeds

I printed out the image and chose glass colours that went with it.

I made a few beads.
But there seems to have been a turning point this month.
I began to make birds.
At first I thought I would go back to my August colours, but then one day I grabbed them and made a bird. This is one of those Uglies - she is really not so pretty. But here she is posing with the rest of her family.

I am heading to Calgary next week to teach at Tiffany House. Really excited! Two 2-day classes. We will have tons of fun.
At this point I am not sure where this is even going. Feeling frustrated. A nasty ear infection (swimmer's ear or an infection of the canal) has got me down and in pain with little concentration. But enough of my complaining. I am going to share this bunch of ugly birdies. Most of them qualify as ugly. One is so bad I did not even take the poor things picture. Not all of them even make it to becoming an entire bird. I have a wee dish or birdie bits. Not sure what will become of them, but at least they are annealled.

Here are some pictures of the latest bunch.
Here are a couple more pictures. The little questioning birdie lost a toe, but I am going to give the poor fella new feet. He really does look rather cute. And the pair are some of the better looking of the bunch. I am still committed to this project.
Could they wear shoes?

Sounded simple - not so simple.

I worked on shoes alone. Tricky, but I was fairly pleased with the results. But the effort and skill level needed to create a shoe is one thing - the idea of trying to do that one the end of a leg with a bird attached was something else.

Here are the shoes I made.

I did try one little bird with shoes. They are more like slippers. I am not so pleased with either of these dudes. I think I can do better. I am thinking that I could make shoes on legs and then attach finished shoes to bird leg. We shall see - no promises as to when that may happen though.

I worked on feet and think I have come up with a design that I like how they look and how they function. Nail polish on toes is really cute and I can't resist.

I am getting better at making the birds. They have grown since the first batch - this group is much taller than the earlier birds.
I am enjoying this creative process so much. Feeling a bit birdie addicted, but it is not affecting the rest of my life just yet, so I am not signing up for a twelve-step program right now. Perhaps in the future I may need some help ;)
Why not?
That will be in the next batch.

So, how it is working is that I am getting the hang of it and being able to keep the little guy warm and then when he is mostly done (save for the bottoms of legs and feet) he can go into the kiln. This way there are birds in different stages of completeness in my studio - not sure if that is good or bad. Once they get their feet then they must be re-annealled slowly!

This is the latest batch that I took out of the kiln today

I am still seeing lots of room for improvement, but it is also fun to watch the progression.
The next batch are still feetless, but they will have to wait until tomorrow night or perhaps Wednesday to have feet created.
Well now, that is an idea - put the handles on an actual bead.

Scary it is. You spend all that time on a bead and then run the risk of messing it all up.

So, these two beads have handles created in different fashions.

This first green bead had two dots placed for the top and bottom of the handles. Then a series of dots were added, slowly building a bridge. Once the bridge was formed I used tweezers to squish and adjust my handles. A fussy, time consuming method that seems less risky.

This August bead was done differently.
I made one dot which marked the top of the handle. Then I got a large gather of glass good and hot and added to my now glowing hot dot (the handle needs a really good connection or the glass won't be strong). I admit I tore off my first attempt. But I still need some practice on just how hot and when to pull etc etc. So many variables and so little time!

My next challenge is feet - and the rest of the bird too.
I am having fun with the birdies, but I see much - MUCH - room for improvement.
Here is a selection of the recent additions to my flock.
Other times it just worked out that way.
At the Bead and Button show this year I traded with a beadmaking friend. I received the most beautiful owl bead and she requested a green Bakbuk bead in exchange. I did not have any with me, so greens it was for July.

Greens can be tricky. Not all of them really want to stand up to the heat and manipulation I put the glass through while maintaining nice clean lines. It is all about those clean lines for me.

Here is the official photo of my Green Month of July, 2014.
July flew by. I celebrated my 50th birthday by teaching at Corning! I got cake twice! As always, I had the most amazing time at Corning. It is a magical place.

There are some things that you must fight to achieve in taming this glass. Some things just do not come easy. Currently, I am part way through conquering the following:
Feet - as in birdie feet
Triangle beads - just when you think the next one will go as easy as the last one - think again! That is one elusive bead.
and
lastly
Handles - as in handles for vessels - having the guts to actually try to stretch out a handle in one fell swoop after spending how long making that bead? I must be crazy.

Some of these are plain old lousy! If I do say so myself. I made a couple of tester beads in this new glass I got - 263 Mou - can't say I am enamored with this colour. It reacts with ivory, but really strongly so it won't work on fancy beads, but it was great to practice with. I am a big fan of the practice bead. Try it. Do it again. Tweek it. I will overcome - like the little engine that could!

I am determined. Determined to have the guts to throw that large gather on the rim of my glass and gently stretch it out into a beautiful handle!

I did make a bead today - a fancy one - and did just that.
I am looking forward to looking in the kiln - it will be ready in just a few hours!

Birds - I am somewhat obsessed with birds. Lots of styles to try. Feet may be the death of me. But, that determination again. I recently purchased a GTT Bobcat - Bob and I are going to conquer feet together. Wish us luck.

In the background you can see one of the pieces Christa Westbrook and I made recently at Corning. It is not fully functional, as it jumped off it's punty and got tossed in a kiln. We learned so much though. I am hoping to get back there soon to play again.

My third challenge is triangle beads. This is one the beads in Corina's book. It is an old style of bead that can be so amazing. But it is an elusive little so and so. I keep thinking, oh I have you and then nope! There are a bunch of nopes in this bunch.

Lots of challenges and lots of fun.

Took some photos of the July beads - Green this month. I will share them real soon.
I have been busy making beads and teaching.
This has been a wonderful year.

June was Bead and Button - I love that show. This year I was honoured to be their Commemorative Artist. In the end, I made 265 commemorative beads.

Loved seeing the show catalogue!

The pin this year totally reflected the bead pattern. You would not believe the number of people who mentioned that they never realized that the pin reflected the bead.

Bead and Button has also created a really cool photo backdrop that is the pin, which is the bead.
I made lots of beads in May - a very productive month.

June got busy. Bead and Button ordered more beads so that kept me busy and I spent a lot of time prepping for a six day class at Corning. This is the official June picture, a motley crew.
Start to finish - 200 beads - June to December

Here is a photo of the very first beads from the project - the one closest to the camera I rejected - it just did not quite look like the original.

These are some of the very last beads

I will let you decide if you can tell the difference.

Just this past week I completed my 200th Commemorative Bead. Well, actually the number is a wee bit higher. There was, of course, the original bead (1), 200 ordered beads, 10 donated beads and two rejects - a total of 213 very similar beads. Certainly not identical, but close.

They have been a joy to create and they have been difficult too. I can hardly believe that I can go down to my studio tomorrow and do whatever I want! Now, I have to decide what that will be.

The beads have all been cleaned, I just need to pack these puppies up and send them to the Bead and Button Show.

The Math:

Each bead consists of 112 dots, 48 presses and 64 rakes

Total for 213

23,856 dots

10,224 presses

13,632 rakes

Purple beads - many, many purple beads.

They have an official name: Purple Lupine Ottoman

They have an official description too:
This bead is part of my current series of work entitled "Ottoman
Beads". In general my glass work is inspired by many things, including
architecture, pottery, textiles and nature to name a few. This current
series of work has strong influences from Moorish architecture, ceramics
and nature. I am drawn to the recurring motifs of arches, flowers and
calligraphy found in Moorish traditions; the flowing lines and
intersections of color and pattern in ceramics; and the intricate
patterns found in the blossom of a flower.

More specifically, both the purple color and the shapes used in this
bead remind me of one of my favorite flowers - Purple Lupines. A truly multicultural species, variations are found all over the world - North
and South America, the Arctic, the Andes, Australia, New Zealand and
Africa. I have admired lupines growing by the beach in California, in
Texas where they are the official state flower, and in Eastern Canada
where they grow in an amazing abundance. Every year I try to grow them
in my own garden too.

And they form part of an official Artist Statement:

My
work is also about footprints. The footprints we leave behind in each
and everything we do and say. The footprints of glass that can be
manipulated stretched or pushed. Each influences the elements
surrounding it. One footprint pushes the next, but never supplants it.
It's a metaphor for living that I try to live up to.

I have had some fun stacking some of the up and taking pictures.

They are just stacked on top of each other. There is no glue, no hidden bits of wax, no wires. Just all stacked (rather precariously) up! It is a silly thing I like to do with the beads.

I recently hit a milestone of finished beads - 50!

Here are fifty beads in a box! This was actually taken a few days ago - I hit 80 today! Some are still in the kiln and some need to be cleaned. So I have not had a chance to photograph all 80 yet.

I have been listening to books on tape to help pass the time. It is helping. I started my beadmaking adventure by listening to one of my all time favourite books - Clan of the Cave Bear by Jean M. Auel. I loved that book and have likely read it at least three times since it was first published. It was fun to listen to on CD as well. I have also listened to Kim Edwards' newest book, The Lake of Dream (which was great) and The Night Strangers by Chris Bohjalian (spooky! and enjoyable). Currently, I am listening to Dog On It by Spencer Quinn. It is a cute book - told by Chet the dog - he and his partner, Bernie Little, are detectives.

I have been learning all about new technology and apps for getting audiobooks. There are books on CD and there are books that are just electronic files - it is as if they hardly exist at all. You can use an app to download them directly from the library - OverDrive and OneClick are connected to local libraries here. And there is a site where you can purchase books too - Audible.com. The nice thing about purchasing from Audible is that the books don't automatically return themselves before you are done. Amy Waldman-Smithhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13208945305824095624noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5549279680025493202.post-8452987040807804392013-07-31T22:50:00.001-04:002013-07-31T22:50:20.216-04:00Bead and Button 2014 Commemorative Bead update I received the official announcement on June 19th! Number 11.
Would you believe I was not at home when I received the email. I had no idea which one that was!
I was intensely curious - which one was 11 - all I could initially determine was that it had to be a round bead, the bicones where all at the end of the list.
Then I realized that I had access to a copy of the letter sent to Bead and Button. This told me a little more - Ottoman Layered Bead in Purple.
I was pretty sure I knew what it looked like, but not exactly. There were so many beads.
As soon as I got home I looked at my records and was thrilled with Number 11.

Here it is. It had it's picture taken by a pro in Milwaukee!

It has also been renamed "Purple Lupine Ottoman Bead"

You can order one here.

I really did not expect to hear so soon. I was anticipating starting in September. I have been quite busy. Had a small holiday to Manitoulin Island. Spent a week at The Studio of the Corning Museum of Glass studying with Wesley Fleming and then headed to Rochester for the ISGB annual Gathering.

But I have been working away as much as I could. As of today I have made 22 beads!

My strategy for creating so many of the very same bead is to listen to books on tape and just get into the meditative-ness of creating. So far so good. Working my way through one of my favourite books - I think I have read it at least three times - but it is fun to listen to again - Clan of the Cave Bear!

Any gripping books that you can recommend would be appreciated. Amy Waldman-Smithhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13208945305824095624noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5549279680025493202.post-4565579430086871922013-06-14T22:14:00.001-04:002013-06-14T22:14:36.688-04:00Bead and ButtonI love attending the Bead and Button show each year in Milwaukee.
I had the pleasure of helping out my local bead store, BeadFX, at the show way back in 2002 and 2003. I was thrilled to be there - I worked hard, had next to no money to shop but had a blast.

I started returning in 2008. I took a wonderful two day class with Akihiro Okama. The next year I took an even better Master Class with Kristina Logan. Then I started to teach at Bead and Button.

My first year teaching was in 2010 - that makes this year the fourth in a row I have taught! The class was held early in the week, so it was quite small. All the students had a good time and it is wonderful to get to know them and have so much time with each person.

I also had really big news to share. A few months ago I received the most wonderful email - inviting me to be the 2014 Commemorative Bead Artist for the Bead and Button Show Commemorative Bead! I nearly fell off my chair.

I have been making beads for months, keeping track of all the colours, sorting, trying new things. I think I rejected many more beads than I actually offered Bead and Button to choose from.

I wanted the beads to be presented as something special.

I found this adorable box.

I carefully strung each bead and gently wrapped them all in tissue.

I gleefully gave the Box to Marlene Vail, the show organizer.

Now I wait. Which one will they choose? I will let everyone know, just as soon as they announce the official bead for the 2014 Bead and Button Show.

I am honoured to have received this wonderful opportunity. Wish me luck on making them all - initial order is 200 beads - yes 200 identical beads. And if they are well received they may order more!Amy Waldman-Smithhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13208945305824095624noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5549279680025493202.post-64934836817245603092013-05-01T21:32:00.000-04:002013-05-01T21:32:58.199-04:00April 2013 Funny how time goes. I have been gearing up for April for months and months. It loomed large in the horizon for so long and now, poof, it is over.

I truly had the most amazing April this year. I squashed so much fun and beadmaking into this past month.

First off my daughter accompanied me to the Glass Craft and Bead Expo in Las Vegas. She brought a friend with her - Horse (with no name) as we were going to the desert!

Horse has accompanied me all month. He is my new official mascot.

One of the highlights of the trip to Vegas was a charity demo. I actually felt a bit nervous the entire time, but Sam Hibler was great to make beads with and she kept me and the onlookers very entertained.

We were able to stay an extra day in Las Vegas and had a chance to visit the Valley of Fire state park. OH MY! What a beautiful place. If you ever are in the Vegas area, don't miss the opportunity to spend a day in the park. And, remember to pack a lunch - there is NOTHING around - I really mean it NOTHING.

Next stop in my April Whirlwind was Corning. The Corning Glass Museum is one of my favourite places. They just updated their Chihuly - it received a cleaning and now has green and yellow bits.

My class was full class at The Studio at Corning. I had the best students. It is such a wonderful feeling for me to see the light in people's eyes as they get as excited about melting glass as I do.

Before I even had a chance to catch my breath after Corning I was headed out west to the Whistler Molten Experience Bead Retreat. I was invited as their guest artist. Talk about an honour.

This is the view from the Edgewater Lodge where we stayed. That is Whistler - they were still skiing up there!

I did a few demos and watched a few more. I met so many wonderful people. I ate the most amazing sushi in Steveston on the way home too!

The retreat was fantastic. It was very special to be selected as the guest artist. I was happy to share my techniques and enjoy the tranquility of the mountains.

The skunk cabbage was in bloom - seems a pretty nasty name for something that looks so lovely. Apparently it can give off quite the odour!

In the background you can see the gazebo where the demos were held.

So, that was my April. Life should be fairly quiet for a bit. May I will be in Dallas, June is my annual trip to Bead and Button and then a bit of home time before Gathering in Rochester.
